Akhenaten and his wife Queen Nefertiti were behind a revolutionary period of Egyptian rule known as the Amarna Interlude. Signified by a flourishing of a new form of art and by religious upheaval   Together, they fostered the worship of the sun god Re in the form of the cult of the sun disc Aten   They established themselves as living gods - thus only by worshipping the royal pair could people access the Aten. In this scene Akhenaten, Nefertiti, and one of their daughters (some will say that it actually one of Ramses lesser wives Kiya) offer sacrifices to the sun-disk Aten, whose rays, stretching down, end in hands bearing the ankh or Egyptian symbol of eternal life.
