Papyrus Painting - The Celestial Goddess Nut (Nout) on Dark Papyrus

Product Description:  Papyrus painting of the ancient Egyptian sky-goddess Nut on dark papyrus.  She is the personification of the sky and of the heavens, the daughter of Shu and Tefnut.

Nut was the barrier separating the forces of chaos from the ordered cosmos in this world. The god Ra was said to enter her mouth after setting in the evening and travel through her body during the night to be reborn  each morning. She also swallows the stars and have them reborn later. In the death cult she plays a part in the resurrection of the dead; she is portrayed on the inside of the lids of the sarcophagi. The pharaoh was said to enter her body after death, from which he would later be resurrected.  As sky-goddess as portrayed  here she is a naked woman covered with painted stars, held up by Shu. Thus she forms the firmament above her husband Seb, the earth. Her fingers and toes were believed to touch the four cardinal points or directions. The hieroglyphics tell her story. 

All papyrus paintings are sent with "rough" edges, easily trimmed to fit your framing needs.  Dark papyrus is aged by soaking it in water and letting the sugars age the papyrus, it breaks down the fibers and gives a very old authentic feel.  You may notice that there are some pin holes on the canvas, this is part of the aging process.

Changes implemented by the Ministry of Antiquities requires all papyrus to be inspected by an expert - what this means is that while your order will show as shipped, it may in fact be on hold at the Cairo airport pending inspection. For this reason we are not able to combine papyrus orders with anything else, i.e. papyrus and jewelry, or glassworks etc. If you are ordering something else in addition to the papyrus you must order it separately. We apologize for any delays that may occur, ultimately it is about the preservation of the history of Egypt.
