Papyrus Painting - Ankh (Key of Life) Crowned with the Winged Solar Disc

Papyrus Painting: Ankh (Key of Life) Crowned with the Winged Solar Disc

The winged sun is a symbol associated with divinity, royalty and power crowns the Ankh or Key of Life in this painting.

The center of the ankh is beautifully details with a scarab, the symbol of rebirth and a lotus flower at the bottom, the symbol of love.  Most appropriately the Ankh rises above the Great Pyramids in Giza. The ankh appears to be associated with the Egyptian glyph for magical protection, sa. However, what the sign itself represents is disputed. The precise origin of the symbol remains a mystery to Egyptologists, and no single hypothesis has been widely accepted. One of the earliest suggestions is that of Thomas Inman, first published in 1869:
[It] is by Egyptologists called the symbol of life It is also called the 'handled cross,' or crux ansata. It represents the male triad and the female unit, under a decent form. There are few symbols more commonly met with in Egyptian art than this. In some remarkable sculptures, where the sun's rays are represented as terminating in hands, the offerings which these bring are many a crux ansata, emblematic of the truth that a fruitful union is a gift from the deity.

All papyrus paintings are sent with "rough" edges, easily trimmed to fit your framing needs.  Dark papyrus is aged by soaking it in water and letting the sugars age the papyrus, it breaks down the fibers and gives a very old authentic feel.  You may notice that there are some pin holes on the canvas, this is part of the aging process.

*****NOTICE****
Changes implemented by the Ministry of Antiquities requires all papyrus to be inspected by an expert - what this means is that while your order will show as shipped, it may in fact be on hold at the Cairo airport pending inspection. For this reason we are not able to combine papyrus orders with anything else, i.e. papyrus and jewelry, or glassworks etc. If you are ordering something else in addition to the papyrus you must order it separately. We apologize for any delays that may occur, ultimately it is about the preservation of the history of Egypt.
